Ukrzaliznytsia called a significant portion of its domestic passenger services, including popular Carpathian routes and connections to de-occupied cities, deeply unprofitable.
This was reported by the chairman of the board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”, Yevhen Peretsovskyi, during a briefing on November 7, according to the Suspilne correspondent.
In particular, services to Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are loss-making, as is the entire Carpathian group.
Without state support the company would have been forced to cancel most suburban and a number of long-distance trains, leaving only the profitable “international services” and part of the “Intercity”, Peretsovskyi said.
According to him, many domestic routes are financially unprofitable due to high operating costs, especially on mountain sections, and the absence of other freight traffic that could cover the maintenance of the infrastructure.
Note that the first train from Kyiv to Kherson since the start of the full-scale war arrived on November 19, 2022.
