The International Sports Court has ordered the Russian Chess Federation to cease any activities in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including in the Kherson region.
This was reported by the British publication Reuters.
The decision was made by the International Sports Arbitration. Russia was given 90 days to comply with the requirement. If this does not happen — it may be suspended from international competitions for up to three years.
This concerns the holding of tournaments and the inclusion of local chess organizations from the occupied regions into the Russian system. In addition to Kherson, this also applies to Crimea and parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The court found that such actions violate the federation’s rules and the principle of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
It is noted that the complaint was filed in 2023 by the Chess Federation of Ukraine. Russia was initially fined, but the decision has now been strengthened.
