The Kherson City Court annulled a court decision from 16 years ago that had declared a local resident dead. As it turned out, the man had been alive all that time, but was in custody and serving sentences in correctional facilities.
This became known from the court’s verdict.
Back in May 2006, at the request of the man’s wife, he was declared missing because there had been no information about him at his place of residence for more than five years. Later, in February 2010, the Dniprovskiy District Court of Kherson officially declared the man dead.
However, recently the “deceased” himself applied to the court with a request to annul that decision. The man explained that he learned about his legal status by accident while being held at Petrivska Correctional Colony No. 49.
The court examined materials from his personal file and discovered that the convict had not gone anywhere, but was regularly held in custody and served terms under court sentences at various times, starting in 2001. In particular, since October 2025 he has been serving another sentence under the judgment of the Vitovsky District Court of the Mykolaiv region. In addition, in December 2008 he even officially registered his place of residence and obtained a passport.
Since the fact that the man was alive was fully confirmed, the court granted his petition.
The Dniprovskiy District Court’s 2010 decision to declare the Kherson resident dead has been officially annulled.
