The Union of Journalists of Russia was expelled from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The decision was made during the organization’s congress in Paris.
This was reported by a People’s Deputy of Ukraine and head of the subcommittee on humanitarian and information policy Yevheniia Kravchuk.
The reason for the expulsion was the opening in 2022 of branches of the Union of Journalists of Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
The Union of Journalists of Russia said that these structures were allegedly created to “ensure the safety and social protection of journalists”. They also called the IFJ’s decision a “cynical substitution of concepts” and said they do not intend to challenge it.
