The SBU has notified in absentia a Russian general suspected of taking part in the occupation of Kherson in 2022.
This is reported on the SBU’s website.
It concerns Major General Oleksandr Kornev, commander of the 7th Air Assault (Mountain) Division of the Russian Southern Military District.
According to the investigation, on 24 February 2022 the suspect commanded his division, which, together with other units of the “Dnepr” grouping of forces, carried out the occupation of the Kherson region.
On the first day of the invasion, units of the Russian 7th Air Assault Division, together with other enemy formations, entered the Kherson region from temporarily occupied Crimea.
After seizing the Kherson region, the Russians isolated the area, creating a humanitarian crisis during which they carried out mass repressions against local residents.
As a result of enemy actions, thousands of civilians were killed or wounded, including women and children. Hundreds of civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed or damaged.
Among other things, on the orders of the Russian general his subordinates set up checkpoints on the roads of the Kherson region, which were used to abduct people and “confiscate” private property.
Based on the collected evidence, investigators of the Security Service have notified Kornev in absentia of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 437 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (crimes of aggression committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy).
