The court handed down a sentence to Russian security officer Oleksandr Medelskyi, who tortured a Kherson resident in a temporary detention facility.

The investigation found that in August 2022 Russian police captain Medelskyi, together with armed Russian servicemen, illegally detained a local resident. The man was forcibly taken to the detention facility on Teploenerhetykiv Street in Kherson.
There Medelskyi personally took part in interrogations and beat the detainee, trying to “extract information” about his cooperation with the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
He beat the victim with a rubber baton, threatened to cut off his fingers and hands, and simulated shooting the man.
In addition, the detainee was kept in a filthy cell with cockroaches, was fed only once a day, and there were half as many sleeping places as people.
The Russian’s participation in war crimes was proven thanks to the testimony of the victim himself, who identified him from a photo, as well as the findings of a medical examination. In addition, traces of blood and instruments of torture were found in the detention building, and lists of weapons bearing Medelskyi’s name were discovered in the occupiers’ documents.
The court in absentia found Oleksandr Medelskyi guilty of violating the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay over 10,000 hryvnias for the examinations.
