Scientists from the occupying authorities reported an increase in the population of mollusks in the Sea of Azov due to rising water salinity.
This is reported by pro-Russian media.
The Southern branch of the Russian All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) announced the completion of studies of populations of commercial mollusks in the Sea of Azov.
According to the occupying specialists, the ecosystem of the water body is allegedly undergoing changes due to an increase in sea water salinity to 14–15 per mille.
The agency assures that such conditions promote the spread not only of shrimp, but also of mollusks such as scapharca (Anadara), rapana and mussel, whose biomass has allegedly increased for future commercial fishing.
Recall that in January this year in the Russian Federation it was claimed that stocks of migratory and semi-migratory fish in the Sea of Azov fell to a historic minimum. Such species as zander, bream and chekhonya were on the verge of extinction.
At the same time, in May 2024 the occupying authorities admitted that the Sea of Azov is unsuitable for swimming due to an increase in plankton and jellyfish in it.
About the threat of the Sea of Azov’s extinction the Ukrainian authorities reported as early as May 2022. One of the reasons for this is the Russian bombardment of “Azovstal”.
