Occupiers on the left bank of the Kherson region have limited the internet for “security reasons”. Before this, they claim, everything was “better than in Crimea”.
This was reported to pro-Russian media by the former deputy occupation minister of communications of the region, Mykhailo Shpir.
According to him, the internet speed was deliberately limited to 256 kbps. At the same time, modern home internet speeds usually range from 20,000 to 100,000 kbps (20–100 Mbps) and higher.
The speed Shpir refers to was characteristic of the internet in the early 2000s.
“Until the summer of 2025 communications in the region were better than in Crimea, but then an order about ‘pessimization’ was issued from above. The point is simple: so that people could at least write messages, but terrorists and saboteurs would not have a proper channel to transmit video from cameras and drones,” said Shpir.
Throughout the entire period of the occupation of the left bank of Kherson region, communications and the internet there have remained consistently poor.
This is especially noticeable in the coastal settlements, as reported by the occupation authorities themselves. In the summer of 2024 the occupiers stated that they do not plan to buildthere new mobile communication facilities.
According to the occupation authorities themselves, the quality of communications in the region is supposedly satisfactory to 51% of residents.
