European leaders have prepared their own counterproposal to American “peace plan”, which the administration of Donald Trump recently presented to Ukraine.
The Washington Post reports this, citing a document that came into the outlet’s possession.
In particular, Europe insists on returning the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the Kakhovka dam and the restoration of control over the Kinburn Spit to Ukraine, which should play a critically important role in a peaceful settlement. Ukraine should also receive “unimpeded passage” on the Dnipro River.
In addition, the European counterproposals include preserving the size of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, all other territorial issues will be considered only after a complete ceasefire.
According to the WP, this approach was agreed upon by more than a dozen EU country leaders during meetings on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg. Among the signatories – the President of France Emmanuel Macron and the Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz.
Recall that in April this year the envoy of the American president, Steve Witkoff, presented European officials with a proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Back then it was proposed that Ukraine should recognize Crimea and Donbas as Russian territory, in exchange for Kyiv being returned control over occupied parts of Kharkiv Oblast, as well as over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the Kakhovka dam.
