Eco-activists and conservationists urged the Ministry of Culture to include Velykyi Luh in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The authors of the appeal emphasize that Velykyi Luh is one of the largest contemporary examples of natural ecosystem restoration.
“It took only three years for a young forest to grow on the bottom of the dried Kakhovka reservoir, and for fish to migrate back to Khortytsia Island to their natural habitat. Although these changes cannot restore what was lost, this territory can regain its ecological and cultural significance”, – the statement reads.
Activists also urged citizens and representatives of public organizations to join in supporting the appeal via the link.
Earlier, ecologist Maksym Soroka said that the ecosystem of Velykyi Luh, which existed before the construction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, was lost forever. At the same time, the expert noted that nature does not return to its previous state, but creates a new ecosystem on the former bottom of the artificial sea – a so-called pseudo-forest.
