Today U.S. senators released a statement regarding the killings of civilians by Russia at a time when Christians around the world are celebrating Christmas.
«We condemn Russia’s brutal attacks on Kherson, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Donetsk and Kryvyi Rih, carried out against innocent Ukrainians who had gathered to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace together with loved ones and in prayer. It bears repeating: President Zelensky agreed to a Christmas truce, but Putin refused, instead ordering soldiers to continue committing brutal crimes of aggression on one of Christianity’s holiest days”, – the statement reads.
According to representatives of both parties, even for countries at war there is a long history of Christmas truces, notably during World War I. Putin’s decision today to launch attacks instead of a ceasefire is a sobering reminder to all: Putin — a ruthless killer who is not interested in peace and cannot be trusted.
“We stand with the people in Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kherson and Donetsk who are celebrating the birth of Christ under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. The faith of the Ukrainian people is stronger than the evil the Kremlin has unleashed today”, – the statement reads.
The statement was signed by: Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat from New Hampshire), the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Thom Tillis (Republican from North Carolina), Jacky Rosen (Democrat from Nevada), John Barrasso (Republican from Wyoming), Chris Coons (Democrat from Delaware), Angus King (Independent from Maine), Jerry Moran (Republican from Kansas), Jeff Merkley (Democrat from Oregon) and Chris Van Hollen (Democrat from Maryland).
