The court handed down a sentence to a rescuer from the temporarily occupied settlement of Kalanchak in the Kherson region, Oleksandr Babych, who defected to the Russian side.
The verdict is published on the website of the Unified State Register of Court Decisions.
As the investigation found, in the summer of 2022 Babych voluntarily took the position of head of the district department of the illegally established fire-rescue unit in Kalanchak.
In this position he led the rescue unit and was responsible for its work, ensured the fulfillment of tasks and performed other duties in the illegally created body.
In court, questioned witnesses said that after the start of the occupation Babych remained in Kalanchak and headed the fire station already under Russian control.
Witnesses also said that Babych offered Ukrainian rescuers to join the Russian side and promised promotions, asked them to train new employees recruited by the occupying authorities, demanded reports on call-outs, fuel expenditures and other work, ordered the removal of Ukrainian symbols from the fire station and the raising of the Russian flag, and also arrived at the station together with Russian security forces who also urged cooperation.
Having examined the evidence, the court in absentia found Oleksandr Babych guilty of collaborationist activity (part 5 of Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of all property.
Earlier we wrote that the court handed down a verdict to the occupying head of the colony in Stara Zbur’ivka in the Kherson region, Oleksiy Soroka.
