The defendant in the death of Kateryna Handziuk, the former head of the Kherson Regional Council Vladyslav Manger, does not intend to agree to the closure of the proceedings due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.
His lawyer Dmytro Ilchenko said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“Manger will never agree to the closure of the proceedings on statute-of-limitations grounds — and without the defendant’s consent the case will not be closed. His goal is a full acquittal and obtaining compensation from the state for the knowingly unfounded accusation”, — Ilchenko said.
Earlier we wrote that the case of Kateryna Handziuk may be delayed in court due to the connections of Manger’s lawyer with the Prosecutor General.
On June 26, 2023 the Dnipro District Court of Kyiv rendered a verdict for Vladyslav Manger and Oleksiy Levin. They were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each in the case of the deadly attack on the activist.
The consideration of Manger’s defense appeal on the merits began in April 2024.
In the summer of 2025, the lawyers of Kateryna Handziuk’s family asked the court to expedite the appellate review, because there are grounds to believe that Manger’s defenders are delaying the process.
In July 2018, Kateryna was doused with concentrated sulfuric acid, which caused burns to 40% of her skin. She was transported to Kyiv, where more than 10 surgeries were performed.
For 96 days Kateryna Handziuk fought for her life, but on November 4, 2018, she died.
