After a prolonged illness, Crimean Tatar activist and former political prisoner, a resident of Henichesk district, Edem Bekirov, died in one of Istanbul’s hospitals.
This was reported by QIRIM.News.
Edem Bekirov was one of the Kremlin’s released prisoners who was returned home in 2019 during the first large exchange between Ukraine and Russia.
After returning to Ukraine, Edem Bekirov’s health remained serious. He underwent treatment for a long time, but the illness took his life.
Recall that a resident of Kherson Oblast, Edem Bekirov, spent several months in a Russian pre-trial detention center on charges under Article 222 part 2 and Article 222.1 part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code (possession and transfer of explosive substances and ammunition).
Security forces detained him at the entrance to Crimea on the morning of December 12, 2018. He was traveling to the peninsula to visit his elderly mother and other relatives before a scheduled heart operation. On September 7, 2019, Bekirov was released and taken out of Crimea by the special services as a result of the “large exchange” between Ukraine and Russia.
