President Volodymyr Zelensky stripped Kherson-born dancer Serhiy Polunin of Ukrainian citizenship.
This is evidenced by the relevant decree of the head of state.
Prior to this, in April 2025, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine adopted a decision to impose sanctions on him.
Serhiy Polunin was born in Kherson; in 2012 he moved to Russia.
In 2018 Polunin announced that he had obtained Russian citizenship, posting a photo of his new passport and stating that he was “glad to become a Russian”.
In August 2018 he performed at the festival “Opera in Chersonesus”, which took place in annexed Crimea.
In 2019 he became acting rector of the Academy of Choreography in occupied Sevastopol. Last year he left the rector position and announced that he is leaving Russia.
